How Can I Find Information in AgeLine Specific to a State or States, or Countries Other Than the United States?

AgeLine can be easily searched for information on a specific state or country. Use the Advanced Subject Search screen to ensure that the items retrieved have a major focus on the state, province (Canada), or country. You can use Boolean OR (or the semicolon) to string together a number of states, countries, or provinces before pairing the string with a topic or topics. For more information, see the Search Help topics Using Boolean Operators to Search and Tips for Using AgeLine's Advanced Subject Search.

If you would like to find every mention of a locale in AgeLine, use the Basic Search screen. For more information, see the Search Help topic Tips for Using AgeLine's Basic Search Screen.

States

Articles and books described in AgeLine are given the state name as a Subject Keyword when the state location is of particular relevance. All program descriptions and evaluations and discussions of state legislation or public policy include the state name as a Subject Keyword.

Use the Advanced Subject Search screen if you want to find only documents that have a major focus on the state or provide state-level information.

If you would like to find every mention of a locale in AgeLine, use the Basic Search screen.

Example 1
If you would like to search for all AgeLine items about Medicaid in Minnesota or Wisconsin, you could do the following in the Advanced Subject Search screen:
minnesota; wisconsin
AND
medicaid

Example 2
If you would like to find information on supportive services programs for older adults in California, follow this strategy in the Advanced Subject Search screen:
california
AND
supportive services
AND
program description

Example 3
If you would like to see material on Pennsylvania state taxes, try the following in the Advanced Subject Search screen:
state
AND
taxes
AND
pennsylvania

Countries

Articles and books described in AgeLine are given the Subject keyword United States unless they are specifically about another country or the research was conducted in another country, in which case they are given the Subject for that country plus the Subject Outside United States. If, for example, a research article describes a study conducted in Italy, AgeLine editors add both Italy and Outside United States as Subjects for that article's record in the database.

Example 1
If you would like to search for all AgeLine items on social security reform in several countries, you could do something like the following in the Advanced Subject Search screen:
italy; australia; japan; netherlands
AND
social security reform
This will retrieve all the items that focus on Italy or Australia or Japan or the Netherlands and also focus on social security reform.

Example 2
If you would like to find information on caregiving burden in countries other than the United States, try the following in the Advanced Subject Search screen:
caregiving burden
AND
outside united states

Example 3
If you would like to find comparisons between the United States and other countries on a particular topic (for example, early retirement), follow this search strategy in the Advanced Subject Search screen:
united states
AND
outside united states
AND
early retirement

Example 4
If you would like to find the set of documents that discuss or compare two or more countries, start with the following in the first search box in the Advanced Subject Search screen:
international; cross cultural studies
Explanation: International is used to describe documents that focus on two or more countries. Cross Cultural Studies is used for studies comparing cultures within a country or among different countries. Before 1994, Cross Cultural Studies was used more broadly for any type of comparison between countries. Start your search with the two Subjects linked by Boolean OR (semicolon or radio button OR) to retrieve a comprehensive set of documents comparing countries.

Searching for Documents on Residents of a Country Versus Documents
on Immigrants From That Country

To identify documents focusing on people from other countries, use the country name Subject (for example, China) for people living in that country, and use the ethnic group Subject (Chinese) for people outside their native country (for example, in the United States).

Example 1
To find information on caregiving in China:
china
AND
caregivers

Example 2
To find information on caregiving among Chinese people living in the United States:
chinese
AND
caregivers
AND
united states
