Limiting an AgeLine Search by Document Type

On all of the search screens, the system defaults to retrieving records of all document types--journal articles, books, and book chapters; however, the searcher may ask the system to retrieve records representing only one document type.

Here are the steps for limiting your search by document type:

Enter your search terms in the search box(es) at the top of the screen.
Go to the "Document type" field below the search box(es) and click on the down arrow to view the document types: chapter, journal article, or book.
Click on the document type you want.
Choose other limits if you want them (publication year, audience type[s], and /or maximum items displayed).
Click on the SEARCH button.

It is also possible to search using only the Limit Results fields, leaving empty the search box(es) at the top of the screen.

Example 1: Limited by document type

You may want to search for all the records in the AgeLine database representing a particular document type, such as a chapter.

Go to the "Document type" field.
Click on Chapter.
Click on the SEARCH button.

Example 2: Limited by year, audience type, and document type

You may want to see all the general interest books in AgeLine that were published in 1999-2000.

At the "Year" field, type 1999 in the "from" box and 2000 in the "through" box.
At the "Audience type(s)" field, choose General/Consumer.
In the "Document type" field, click on Book.
Click on the SEARCH button.

While you are in your search session, your choice of document type will remain the same for all your searches on any search screen unless you change the setting. To return to the default document-type setting of "All Document Types," click that choice in the "Document type" box or click the CLEAR FORM button at the top or bottom of the screen.

The search results will be displayed chronologically, with the most recently published items first.
